Bedroom Interior Design in Austin

The room you see first and last. Usually the last one finished.

Bedroom with a low platform bed, walnut dresser and a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city, designed by Refinery ATX in Austin, TX

The bedroom is usually the last room to get any attention. Nobody else sees it, so it inherits whatever furniture was left over and whatever storage came with the house. It’s also the first room you look at every morning.

The room that gets left for last

Most bedrooms I walk into aren’t badly designed. They were never designed at all. A bed pushed against the only wall it fits on. A lamp that came from a different house. A dresser doing double duty as a nightstand. Everything works, and nothing was chosen.

Where I start

With how you actually use the room. Which side of the bed you get out of. Whether you read at night or watch something. Where you put down what’s in your pockets. What time the light comes in, and whether that’s welcome. Those answers set the layout, the lighting and the textiles before anything gets bought.

The closet is part of the bedroom

You can’t calm a bedroom while the closet beside it is a pile. So I treat them as one room. Clothes get sorted by type and then by color, hangers get matched, shoes come off the floor, and anything out of season moves up and out of the daily sightline. The rule is simple: if you can see it, you should want to see it.

Design or organizing?

Sometimes a bedroom needs a plan — furniture, lighting, window treatments, the whole room. Sometimes it needs one focused day in the closet and a donation run. I do both, and after a walkthrough I’ll tell you honestly which one you are looking at.

How long it takes

The organizing side is usually a single day, sometimes two if the closet has years in it. A full design is measured in weeks rather than days, because furniture and fabric have lead times. You’ll know which one you are in after the first visit.

More on how I work is on the organizing and interior design pages.

If the bedroom has been at the bottom of the list for a while, it’s a good place to start.

I work across Austin — West Lake Hills, Tarrytown, Barton Creek and everywhere in between.
