Living Room Interior Design & Styling in Austin

The living room is the one people see first, and it’s usually the one carrying furniture from three different chapters of your life. It works. It just doesn’t look like a decision.

What is usually going on

Nine times out of ten the problem isn’t taste, it’s scale. A rug two sizes too small. A sofa floating in the middle of nothing. Art hung at the height of whoever put the nail in. The pieces can all be good on their own and the room still reads as unresolved, because nothing is talking to anything else.

Where I start

With how the room gets used on a normal Tuesday, not on the day you host. How many people sit down at once. Whether the television is honestly the focal point or you’ve been pretending it isn’t. Where the light comes from in the afternoon. Then I set the anchors — seating plan, rug size, lighting — and everything else follows from those.

Shelves, and what goes on them

Built-ins and open shelving are where most living rooms come apart, because they get filled instead of composed. I work in groups of three, leave real gaps, mix heights, and let books lie flat as often as they stand. Objects earn their place by being useful or genuinely yours. Nothing goes up because it fills a hole.

The last ten percent

This is the part people skip, and then can’t explain why the room still feels unfinished. Lamps at the right height. A throw that isn’t folded like a hotel. One live plant. A tray that stops the coffee table collecting everything. It is small, inexpensive work, and it is the whole difference between furnished and finished.

How it works

Some clients want a full plan with furniture and lead times. Others want me to work with what they already own and fix the arrangement, the lighting and the layering. If the real problem is that the room is holding too much, that’s the organizing side.
